How Often Should You Test?

The amount of glucose in the blood varies from hour to hour. Daily monitoring is the best way to keep track of how food, physical activity, and other factors affect your blood sugars. Shortly after you are diagnosed with type 2 diabetes, your doctor or diabetes educator will likely advise you to check your blood sugars several times throughout the day. The most common patterns for blood sugar monitoring include testing:

when fasting, usually upon rising in the morning

before meals

two hours after meals

at bedtime
